What’s a typical day look like for me?
Many of you don’t know, but I am not a full-time author. I do most of my writing in the evenings and on weekends, but since I don’t have a set schedule working in real estate, I’m sometimes able to sneak in a few hours of writing during the day as well.
Monday through Friday, my routine is fairly standard. My wife wakes up with our daughter. I get up a little later and take our daughter to school. I’m usually sipping some form of caffeinated beverage during this time. When I return, I immediately jump into an at-home workout for about an hour. I turned my shed into a mini gym with a treadmill, heavy bag, and free weights. I play my music loud. Afterwards, I’m either at the office evaluating and working on deals, or on the way out to meet a client. Everyday is different since no two buildings or two clients are the same. I’m usually back at home around five or six in the evening.
We spend time as a family for a few hours. After I’ve connected with my wife and daughter, I’ll head back to my computer for more work. If there’s real estate stuff to do, that happens first. Then it's writing. More or less, I’ve kept up with this schedule for two years. Obviously, other things happen during the day—meals, dog walks, and personal errands—and it's often during these times that new writing ideas pop into my mind. I strongly believe inspiration can’t be forced, so the best thing I do when I’m stuck is get up and do something else.
Weekends are mainly for spending time with my wife and daughter. Summer or winter, we’re outside in the backyard with the dog, or in the nearby park. My wife is my best friend, and my daughter is the cutest, funniest person on the planet. On both Saturday and Sunday night, after they’ve gone to bed, I’m feeling good and back at my computer writing. My brain usually shuts off around midnight. I’ve tried to push it, but the words stop making sense pretty fast.
